3/15/2012 – Queenstown, NZ
When we got to Queenstown, it was cool and rainy. It sits on Lake Waitaka, in a basin surrounded by mountains on all sides. It's the type of city that seems to be 100% inhabited by tourists, so it has a lot to offer in that area: jet boating, parasailing, sky diving, hiking, bungy jumping… and my favorite: mountaintop luging!
It cleared up in the afternoon, so we (Rob, Rocio, Susan, Rebecca, Peter, Michelle and I) took a gondola up the mountainside (passing a bungy jumping station and some grazing sheep). Then: Skyline Luging. This is the most fun activity so far; you sit on a plastic sled with wheels on the bottom, and you have a handle in between your feet that you pull back towards you to brake, and let go forward to go. The course is very scenic, but in MY opinion, if you do it right, everything should be a blur.
I couldn't wait to go! There was an inebriated gentleman behind me and we started a friendly race. He was good, but not good enough. In the end, I burned him of course. I am my brother's sister, after all...
After luging we saw a Maori tribal show. It was absolutely gorgeous; singing, dancing, weaponry displays, and a bit of comedy. We went into the city for dinner at a restaurant that had a fireplace, for which I was eternally grateful. My teeth were chattering because it cools down so dramatically in the mountains at night.
